The play Antigone was a great tragic drama.The main idea of this play was the conflict of opinions between Antigone and King Creon.Both of these characters had different opinions regarding human law and divine law.Creon believed in the human law, because he believed that since he was king he knew what was best.Antigone also believed in human law but to a certain extent.The play was to leave us thinking of which law and whose actions were right.
The play begins with King Creon letting the people know that Polyneices and Eteocles, brothers of Antigone, had both died in battle.Polyneices became a traitor to Creon in the battle.Creon lets it be known that Polyneices is a traitor and shall not be buried, but rather let his body lay in the dirt and let the animals feed off of it, and anybody who buried the body would be defying the law and would receive punishment of death.Antigone defies the law because she believed it was morally wrong not to give her own brother a proper burial.This is where the divine law, better described as the law of the gods, comes into play.Antigone tells Creon that some of his laws may not always be the right ones. She believes the laws of the gods who say to bury the body.This is also what Haeman, son of Creon, believes, and asks not to sentence Antigone to death fore she is his fiancé.Creon, not wanting to show weakness, sentences Antigone to death anyhow by burying her alive in a cave.
After some days had past, a prophet had showed up to see Creon and warn him that what he had done was wrong.The prophet said that the gods agreed with Antigone and that Creon should release her and give proper burial to the body of Polyneices or else harm would come his way.Creon hurried to go release Antigone but was too late.Antigone had already hung herself.After Haeman had heard this news he also killed himself.Then Eurydice, wife of Creon, had also taken her own life cursing Cre…
