One of the most overlooked and sometimes forgotten countries of Europe is the country of Portugal, formally known as the Portuguese republic.It is one of the world's most underestimated treasures, full of tradition and history.In the United States, Portuguese immigrants are a minority, unless one found themselves in West Warwick, Rhode Island or in New Bedford, Massachusetts.Yet, so much is still unknown.One may look at their lifestyle and that of their family, and see traditions and practices that are commonplace for them, and yet be ignorant about their country of origin.Its history, culture, and lifestyle may never be explored, but once it has, it opens new doors of understanding and knowledge.The Portuguese Republic underwent many changes and difficulties in just a short period of time.There are a plethora of reasons why someone would decide to leave their country of birth in favor of another.Perhaps it may not even be the country itself, but a specific part of it.My family left the Acores (Azores Islands), an autonomous set of islands located in the Atlantic Ocean between North America and Portugal, which are under Portuguese rule, in favor of a better life.Living conditions in the Azores are not the same as the living conditions on the mainland.A better life with better opportunities was more important, and that is the choice they made.
