Theater between a Health Care Provider and a Patie

ntThere is a fine line between intimate and professional. An encounter between a health care provider and a patient should not have any actions, which may put the two on a non-professional level. For example the health care provider would cross this line if they were to watch a patient get undressed in front of them. Even something as simple as improper eye contact or a particular tone of voice may lead to someone crossing this line. Therefore the health care provider must be able to act in such a way that keeps the patient and the doctor at different levels.
A Gynecologist must be very careful in the way they act. Especially because they are dealing with the more private areas of a female. When dealing with these very sensitive areas it would be very easy for the patient to interpret the doctors actions and being more than professional. Even the doctors vocabulary must be appropriate. He/she can not use street terms. The whole point is that the two people remain on two different levels. The patient must be comfortable when confronting the doctor. She reveals more to this one person than she would to any of her closest friends. To top it all off she just met him/her.
Although I never went to see a Gynecologist I have had x-rays taken. I had to change into those skimpy hospital gowns. I was told to change in a separate room. Changing in front of anyone would make me feel uncomfortable, but changing in front of the doctor would be even worse, because he/she would be in physical contact with me. They would not be just another stranger, but someone in direct contact with me.
Seeing a doctor is not like seeing a friend. They are they to medicalize your situation. So we see that it is very important that the encounter between a healthcare provider and their patient must remain professional. The patient and the doctor must both contribute their acting skills towards achieving this goal.
