In the article, "If the Television Program Bleeds, Memory for the Advertisement Recedes," a study claims that television violence causes the viewer to forget advertising they see during the program.The basis for this argument is the theory that when someone sees a violent act on TV it can make them angry.This anger supposedly clouds the mind and interferes with the brain's encoding of information.Although this article's main claim is that there is a direct correlation between violence on television and aggression in people, the real focus is how violent programming affects the brain's ability to recall information from memory.
Our reading tells us that there are three parts to memory: encoding, storage, and retrieval.According to the study, Hollywood violence increases aggression in some subjects.Because this subject is in an angry or aggressive mood, in theory, they will have moredifficulty encoding information.The information cannot be stored in the brain, nor retrieved, as it was never received into memory.The subject's mind was wandering during the advertisement, perhaps trying to calm them self from what they just witnessed.They also suggest that the information may be encoded and stored into the brain, but because the viewer was angry at the time they saw it, they will not be able to retrieve it once they are asked to call upon the data.
In my opinion, this article makes a few valid points I would question its credibility.The fact that they use the phrase, "dramatically increases aggressive behavior" (p 44) makes it sound like violent television turns viewers into psychotic killers.Also, at the end of the article they give an example of a student watching violent TV while studying.Since they were viewing a program with violence, the article says they would have a more difficult time recalling the material in a classroom.I believe that if this student did poo…
